FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is Pubnet®?
Pubnet is an electronic order fulfillment and communications system designed exclusively for the book publishing and selling community. It is the next generation of Pubnet®, a pioneering electronic commerce service that has 11 years' experience serving the publishing industry. Pubnet makes the ordering faster, easier and more responsive, and provides more information resources. Pubnet offers one-stop access to nearly 100 of the largest publishers and suppliers, representing more than 500 imprints and distributed lines.

What are the benefits of using an electronic ordering service?
Ordering books electronically provides booksellers easy access to publishers and distributors. It is a secure and reliable way to not only place orders but track them as well. Ordering by computer is far less labor-intensive and time-consuming than other methods, giving booksellers more time to spend with customers. It also saves time and increases efficiency by providing access to an ever-growing database of key business documents transmitted electronically.

How is Pubnet different from other electronic ordering communities?
Pubnet serves the publishing and bookselling industry, and only that industry. Pubnet's dedication is reflected in its parent company, Pubnet LLC, a limited liability corporation owned equally by the Association of American Publishers, the American Booksellers Association, the National Association of College Stores, and R.R. Bowker, a division of Reed Elsevier Business Information and the publisher of Books-In-Print®.

How does Pubnet differ from previous versions of Pubnet?
With Pubnet, the popular Pubnet service moves to the Internet's World Wide Web, accessible through commonly available browser interfaces. That means booksellers and publishers can communicate with point-and-click simplicity. With Pubnet's Rapid Response(TM)

Can customers without Internet access still benefit from Pubnet?
Yes. Customers can access Pubnet through GEIS' High Performance Network ("HPN"). Please contact the service center for more information.

Is learning how to use Pubnet easy?
Yes, because Pubnet relies on the same colorful, easy-to-navigate interface that makes the World Wide Web so simple to use. For those unfamiliar with Web browser features, Pubnet LLC will sponsor training sessions at major book conferences.

What does Pubnet cost?
Pubnet is cost-effective, charging a one-time fee to join. There is also a fee for high-level access to the Books-In-Print database.

What are the computer hardware and software requirements?
A minimum of Intel-based 486 platform; 14.4 kbps modem; Windows 95, Windows 3.1 or Windows for Work Groups; Web browser supporting frames and Java scripts; TCP/IP via dial PPP; ISP subscription; File Transfer Protocol (FTP) capability.
