Harvard University Press, The MIT Press & Yale University Press Centralize Distribution

Harvard University Press and The MIT Press have shared distribution for the last 25 years, and, late last year, Yale University Press joined in, forming Triliteral, LLC.

Since January 2001, the three presses have been phasing into one distribution center, and since May 2002, the listings of all three companies have been in one database.

The three presses complement each other. They all produce scholarly publications and have customers in common. "Merging our three presses just made sense," says Joan O'Donnell, who oversees IT at Harvard University Press. "Now we are in a position to improve our delivery times and meet our customers' technical needs. And, since all three presses offer Pubnet, a customer can order from any one of them or all three with just one order."

To merge distribution, which took at least four years, the Triliteral trio had to install a new system for order fulfillment, reconstruct EDI software, and test with all their customers.

"Pubnet paved the way for stores to receive the presses, and all stores who use Pubnet required only one test," says Joan. "Pubnet provides one-stop shopping - one package per order instead of three. It allows us to fill customer orders quickly and accurately, and decrease our customers' shipping costs.

Vettel at Unitech is Paragon for Pubnet Users

Most Pubnet users are very familiar with the names "Unitech" and "Rich Vettel." Rare is an individual, a team, so knowledgeable and willing to go beyond the call of duty, Unitech clients say.

Rich has worked with publisher computer systems for over 20 years, and began working with Pubnet early on. "We do EDI integration for the book publishing industry only, so we know the major players and the vendors who sell computer systems to them," says Rich.

Pubnet EDI communication and translation is already programmed for most publisher computer systems. "We have experience with clients using all of them, so we're confident that each one is stable," Rich reports.

With just four staff, Unitech supports 38 clients who use Pubnet. When a problem arises, the Unitech team contacts all the players necessary to get the information they need. "We pride ourselves on resolving issues in the same day," says Rich.

"Rich Vettel at Unitech EDI has been quite helpful as an intermediary with Pubnet and other electronic customers," commented Joan O'Donnell at Harvard University Press.

New Discussion List is Launched

NACS has agreed to host an e-mail discussion list for Pubnet users, both retailers and publishers. Users now have a new way to pose questions to each other, as well as Pubnet management.

Called the "Pubnet User's Group," this e-mail discussion list will help publishers, booksellers, and industry system providers to share ideas and suggestions with others running Pubnet on their particular systems. It will provide the opportunity for Pubnet users and providers to openly discuss the service, solve problems, and improve Pubnet in the process.
